About The Book
Nagas are magnificent. You have to see and live amdist them to believe this simple statement. A very large majority of us know little about them. The little that we know is about their nakedness, headhunting and anti-national, hostile, underground, insurgent activity for the last thirty years of independent India's consciousness of its north-eastern periphery. That is poor showing indeed in an exceptionally rich endowment of cultural heritage of our really unique country. May be this very uniqueness is the cause of the country's tolerance of and helping hand to the peripherals without apparently noticing them. This elephantine dexterity in benign negligence is, I suspect, seen as an insult by these newly awakened but exceptionally proud and tough fringemen. In Bombay and Bangalore, Hyderabad and Allahabad, Delhi and Cuttak they are asked as to which country they Many are the instances when they are pressed to produce passports. Their freedom with food-choice and hard drinks, astonishingly carefree and jovial life-style, exceptional health gift given by nature, and a very virile and direct way of life perhaps distance them from the rest of us. By nature they are suspicious, sensitive, wary, distrustful. inward-looking, volatile and very very proud. There cannot be a better friend than the Naga once he identifies his friend; there cannot be a worse foe than the Naga once he feels deceived or let down. Deep inside his inscrutable exterior and penetrating eyes there is tremendous warmth, great geniality, sharp intellect and immense good-will. His codes of conduct are superbly maintained. No woman or child has come to intentioned harm in the thirty year old insurgency in Nagaland. No house is locked in the villages. No guest goes without a present be it an egg, a piece of pork, a banana, a dried fish or whatever. He is terribly homesick, cannot live away from his wife, children and friends, loves every inch of his fields, jungle and fishing streams.
