Author Profile

"Dr. S. Felix, Professor of Tamil Nadu Fisheries University at Chennai has been in teaching and research for the past 27 years in the field of Aquaculture Biotechnology. He has developed a number of ‘farmer-friendly aquaculture systems’ and ‘BMPs. He has half a dozen patents registered in innovative aquaculture systems, protocols and new products to his credit. His area of research includes raceway technology, microbial flocculent based aqua farming, designing of cages and lined farming systems, micro algae based biofuel production, fermented biofloc systems and Marine Single Cell Detritus (MSCD) production. He has to his credit over a hundred research papers and reports, seven books and two dozen manuals. He has created important Research farm and Lab infrastructures for his University viz. Fish Biotechnology Centre (Thoothukudi), Maritech Research Centre (Tharavaikullam), Research Farm facility for Aquariculture (Madhavaram) and Raceway Farm Complex (Thoothukudi). His current interest is to contribute sincerely for the development of ‘Freshwater Ornamental fish culture sector’ a vibrant and the most potential area under aquaculture for the benefit of farming community of the country.
Dr. Arun S. Ninawe, born on 21st June, 1958, is a distinguished scientist holding M.Sc., Ph.D. (Marine Sciences) qualifications. He deals with programs in life sciences and biotechnology under the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt. of India and actively involved in coordination and planning activities in identifying research priorities, project formulation, monitoring, evaluation and deals with various policy issues of programme coordination and research funding. He has been dealing this specialized area of fisheries and marine biotechnology, for more than two decades. He is also involved in social sector of the department of biotechnology by supporting programme areas through biotech-based programs for societal development. Presently he is functioning as Scientist “G” and Adviser in the Department of Biotechnology. He has also successfully discharged the responsibility as the Vice-Chancellor, Maharashtra Animal & Fishery Sciences University, Nagpur, during 2007-2010 and supported the academic sector well to give boost to the education, research and extension in Animal Sciences.
As a subject matter specialist he is functioning on various technical committees and professional bodies for promotion of biotechnology in the country.
As a policy facilitator, he has promoted research priorities, identification and formulation of projects in various disciplines of life sciences especially in Marine Biotechnology and various projects have been materialized on bio-prospecting, genomics, aquaculture technology development, health management, fish nutrition and reproduction. He has given emphasis on product and process development in various aquaculture and marine sector and supported Human Resource Development training to b

About The Book

"Ornamental Aquaculture, a fast developing ‘Aquatic Rainbow Sector’ in India demands true innovations and implementation of advanced technologies to promote itself to the next level to compete in the international market. This book, an edited version deals with a wide range of topics in applied biotechnological techniques viz. fermentation technology, bioremediation based culture system management, genetically modified fish production techniques, colour enhancement, live feed production systems, use of hormones in induced breeding, cell culture technique, toll – like - receptors, cryopreservation techniques, etc.
Adopting these advanced biotechnological techniques in the three vital areas of aquariculture viz. water quality, nutrition and health management it shall go a long way to develop protocols and practices to improve ornamental fish production to newer heights.
This book, a compiled edition, contributed by eminent scientists who are working in various fields of aquariculture or ornamental aquaculture biotechnology, shall be immensely beneficial to scholars, students, scientists, teachers, entrepreneurs, aquariculture farmers, etc. as it deals with a wide range of topics of practical utility in Ornamental Aquaculture Technology and Management."
